Well, I guess that only time will tell if Facebook will succeed with their closed, inferior product (wait, sounds like another software company I know...).

Very interesting conversation. I actually have one on myspace, facebook and orkut. So far Facebook has been the easiest one to get started and find friends. Plays nice with photos and plays nice with my blackberry (best feature I've found as of yet). There a lot of companies that are also integrating their "stuff" with facebook so it looks like its getting better.

I do agree that a a true social network site should allow integration with other Web2.0 sites like Wordpress.

Good stuff.

Gah, I had inadvertently checked the "moderate all comments" box on Wordpress, so I probably killed the conversation just as it was getting good.

[...] I can’t say that I agree with this one 100%, but it certainly is an interesting rant - over at the Industry Interactive, Inc. blog is a post titled "Facebook has failed us (or Facebook is like so Web 1.0)". [...]

"No, I don’t think it’s any of those." - Kim

You are correct in saying the Facebook isn't any of those, but instead of being open and letting the company that's only focus is say blog or pictures, facebook tries to half-ass everything. This model isn't focused on the customer, but rather the bottom line. Hmm.. if user A is on my site for 2 hours adding and viewing photos, blogging, and profile stalking that's a lot more page views.

My beef with facebook is that it's a walled garden, as many in the blogosphere have referred. I think integrating to show photos in facebook is great! However, who will expand there photo functionality more, facebook or picasa? Well I think picasa is a bit more focused on that.

Listen facebook... let me own my data and I will stay with you. Let me keep my blog with wordpress, or whoever and you may ingest it. Let me manage my photos on picasa or flickr because that's what they do and you can have access to it. I will even promise that most people will stay within facebook to view it. But until I can take data out of your black hole as easily as I can put it in I still won't be logging in more than once a week.

No, I don't think it's any of those. I don't think it necessarily needs to be. It'd be great if it were. It's great at what it does. That being said Hotmail does a poor job at sharing photos, Flickr does a poor job at blogging, and Blogger does a poor job of messaging.

Facebook does better than all of them at all three as a whole. I'd love it if any of those features were expanded though (especially Flickr integration).

I don't know that Facebook needs to be the best at all these things - blogging platform, messaging etc. I don't even think it could even it tried. Even the almighty Google isn't the best at everything it does.

Facebook needs to continue to be the best at social networking and to find ways to keep its user base, a good proportion of whom are not as tech savvy as you or I and who therefore do not need it to be the best blogging platform or messaging system. If you or I want better applications for such things we will continue to have to go elsewhere for them, but we will stay of Facebook because our non-techie friends and family members remain there.

I do think Facebook needs to do something different again though and to continually improve, much of the hype and growth it got from its platform launch is waning and it news something else again soon. I think casual games, communication, search and recommendations are good areas for it to focus on.

Agreed Kim, it is the best social networking site. What do you think of the peripheral functions it performs though? Is it the best photo sharing site? Is it the best blogging application? Is it the best messaging system? That's what I'm trying to get at here.

You have exactly nailed it when you said it's the new AOL. I'm mainly there because everyone else is there, but I don't have a lot of use for it. There are only so many zombie invitations any one person wants to delete.

I have to say that Facebook is by far the best social networking site out there. Facebook allows me to build a community of friends that no other website has accomplished to date. I will not be leaving it any time soon.
