Universal notifier

I’m sure this product has to exist out there, because there are just too many Web 2.0 weenies around. What I’m thinking of is something like Growl (I’m getting a 404 there at the moment, but hit Google Cache to get the idea).

It’s actually a pretty simple idea. A generic web service that you could throw a bunch of bits of data at, and it would aggregate them and notify you. Maybe set different “response levels” and notification settings based on those.

One example would be server monitoring. There’s a bunch of web-based, and software-based products out there, and most of them have built in monitoring, but wouldn’t it be nice to have that all pipe through a central location? If a server goes unresponsive, that type of notification would be “highest”, so you’d get an SMS, maybe a phone call, or it would dispatch goons to your house (just kidding).

Other options would be for new mail, maybe stock and weather alerts, voicemail received… there seems to be a pile of possibilities.

Anyone heard of something that does this?

Update: The more thought I gave this, the more I thought that Twitter is probably pretty close to what I’ve got in mind. They’ve got an API, so it’s really just a matter of writing something to tie in to that. Twitter will notify you by e-mail, SMS, IM or RSS of any updates.
